Update

So it’s been over a week since I last posted. Things have been a bit crazy, and I wish I could say it was fantastic news, but really it was just me helping the boyfriend move. He was living in a dump — not his fault, he was new to the area and didn’t know any better. For anyone moving to the Alexandria area of Northern Virginia — STAY AWAY FROM LYNBROOK!!

So anyway, he is moved out. It was tough, all the stairs and all the heavy stuff. I’m still catching up on sleep and trying to ease the pain of a pulled shoulder. But his new place is awesome — he has a garage to himself that is attached to his apartment, crown molding, a great dining room with a bay window. He’s on the back of the community so he backs trees and this morning we opened the windows and let the breeze and the sound of song birds fill the air. It was peaceful, relaxing and everything that we both needed. Beats Alexandria any day.

Moving went as well as it normally can. It was stressful, hot and not fun — but it’s done. His huge 8 foot couch is being delivered today, and hopefully there is room for it!

It’s a very nice sofa, big enough for 5′3″ me and 6′7″ him to sprawl out and watch his new tv. I’m excited. We are heading out to Ikea now, so happy fourth to everyone!

Weekly Find: Oh Joy

Starting this week, I’m going to start a new feature called ‘Weekly Find’, where you can check out some cool products relating to anything having to do with design or home decorating.

Don’t you love it when you randomly stumble upon something online? Something cute, fancy and drool-worthy?

Well I do, and I did it just now. I wanted to share Oh Joy’s shop with you all. You may recognize some of her work from places such as Urban Outfitter’s where she designed the zodiac pillow cases as well as the glasses you can purchase. Super sweet.

But in her personal shop, she has some fantastic little notebooks, folders, and note cards.

All of her products feature either whimsical patterns or shniy overlays. The scalloped edges on her notebooks and a bit of character and girlish charm. The graphic designer in me LOVES the shapes and patterns she has created, from the graphic leaves…

To the intricate-looking agate pattern…

To what might be my favorite, the stones:

All of her products are reasonably priced; the notebooks going for $13.50 for 72 lined pages, to her folder set of 8 (4 of 2 patterns) for $20, to some sale products ranging from $5-$8.

They would make great gifts, for a friend or for yourself. I’m considering picking up a notebook or two — definitely beats the Quill Steno pad I’m using now — so stylish!

Setting Up a Perfect Balcony

From Apartment Therapy

I was inspired by the above photo. This is exactly what I would love to have on my balcony — just not in the middle of New York!

The lush plants covering every space provides a great sea of green that can be enjoyed both outside and inside. The pops of color would make it a happy place whether rain or shine. And I am in love with the bistro set that they have. Sadly, the Inox collection from Design Within Reach is way out of my price range. I mean, come on — a bistro table for 800 clams!?

I’m not sure why the table is so expensive, because the chairs are a reasonable 78$ a piece. Makes no sense.. But the chairs are my worry — what with a 6′7″ boyfriend, they need to be sturdy! I have been on a long-time search for a new patio set, considering I have your standard 30$ set that I ganked from an old roommate in college.

I did notice that target has a somewhat similar product, the Home Gatewood Bistro Set:

It seems like a great product, it has 5 star reviews, and it has free shipping — which is great considering shipping costs for furniture is usually pricey! And if I wanted to customize it, I could paint or stain the teak slats (since I’m more of an espresso-finish person).

Another one that I liked was this unnamed 3-pc Aluminum Bistro Set:

The boyfriend seems to think this one will be more comfortable. And I can’t say that I disagree, but the larger table worries me. It might fit on my next balcony, but not on my current one. Not with the bike and grill out there as well! They are both the same price, $249.99, but I think I am leaning more towards the first option.

Finding the Illusive Apartment

You would think I would be good at this by now. You’d also think that I would know what I want instantly, and not have to view every apartment complex from here to China.

Let me back up. I have this constant desire to keep moving. It started as soon as I graduated high school, and has progressed into something more mature each round. First it was just moving out of my mom’s home and into an apartment shared by 3 other girls (ugh). Then, it was 4 different apartments shared with random people, mostly girls, throughout college. After that, a friend and I were supposed to move in together in Charlotte. That flopped and I lived with him and his step-sisters, 2 dogs and 5 cats for a summer… then I was back in school in D.C., living in another dorm apartment. Once that was finished, I moved in with the roommate from hell, who I thankfully only had to live with for five months. Then I found what I thought was a great place in Alexandria, except it was surrounded by idiots who don’t know how to drive and a population that consists of mostly non-natives. Headache.

During those 3 years of swapping apartments I was always hoping I would be able to move into a place of my own, and I was always scoping out and checking out places in the area for pure enjoyment. I like checking out the decor and stylings of apartment communities–Industrial loft spaces in Arlington, high rises in Alexandria, expansive garden style communities in Fairfax. Once I got into my own place, I began decorating immediately, but as time drew nearer to my moving date (2 months away!), I decided there was no sense in investing in the space anymore.

So finally, my lease is almost up. Over the past couple of months the boyfriend and I have been looking at place after place. This past weekend was no different. Of the four places we checked out for my upcoming move, I have not been able to narrow it down at all. I manage to remove one or two, maybe even get down to one last place and think I have made my decision, and then an hour later I have decided that no, no — I want all my options back, because the living room space was much bigger in that one place, but the kitchen hasn’t been updated. That other one has a large bedroom and a den, but the other one is a much nicer community and has a better floorplan. And then I manage to narrow it down to one — that one with the view of the lake on the top floor with the vaulted ceilings and the newly remodeled kitchen — and then I think about the gym, or how the living room is the same size as I have now.

My dilemma is, where do I make the sacrifices? One of the places had a huge, and I mean HUGE, living room, closet, bedroom and bathroom… But it had a kitchen that was 15 years old. But it was gated! And had a great gym! Do I sacrifice the kitchen to get more space?

It’s so difficult to make a decision.. I have about 2 weeks to make one, before my self-set deadline is up.

Do you have any tips on choosing the best apartment? What do you look for when moving into a new space/area?

Week 11

Right? It is week 11, yes? There’s a reason it has taken me until Thursday afternoon to get around to updating on my weight-loss. The week leading up to my week 10 weigh in was a rough one. I was in a horrible mood, had Doritos and ice cream for dinner on more than one occasion, and generally I just didn’t feel like doing ANYTHING.

But some how I still managed to lose 1 pound. Woo hoo! That leaves me at 14.4 — so close to 15 pounds lost! I am hoping to hit 15 next Tuesday, so keep your fingers crossed.

To be honest, I am surprised that I have lost this much! It feels great, and I can feel my confidence coming back. I don’t feel as weird — like I was on a stage — every time I walk out the door. This carefree attitude is becoming, I’m hoping it’ll stick around.
